Utahns Against Common Core

Hello friends,

I just saw something this week that I found kind of offensive and wanted to share it out. Utah Rep. Dan McKay was the bill sponsor to change our Utah flag from it’s historic look, to something “modern.” When it came up, I thought it was a waste of time to do this with so many other truly pressing issues. The sponsor said he was sad to not see so many Utah flags flying and I think expressed something along the lines of people just weren’t excited about it. He wanted more people to fly the flag.

Seeing this tweak of his this week calls into question the entire motive behind changing the flag. The purpose of a flag is to be a uniting image. The American flag means something to this nation. It’s a symbol of what we’ve been through to become a nation. It’s no different for our old Utah flag. It’s a symbol of this state and who we are. A flag isn’t “adaptable for many uses in the community.” That destroys the whole idea that we are unified. It’s a terrible message and a terrible way to bring people together. It’s totally divisive. If you’re LDS, it’s the whole idea that “-ites” are back and everyone is dividing into their own tribes.

I have signed the referendum to put on the ballot this fall, a vote for the people to decide if we will retain our historic flag, or allow this new “adaptable” rendition to replace it. The only thing that needs replaced is this representative. I do not like referendums or initiatives as they are a tool of direct democracy for the people to bypass the legislature. However, it is legal in code and has been used to correct a few actions in the past. If you would like to sign on and support this referendum as I did, please visit this website and find somewhere to sign the referendum.
